Claim
a suspected Ukrainian drone exploded near a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline on Bulgarian territory
Attributed to Bulgarian officials
Evidence
Multiple independent, mainstream outlets (AFP via wfmz.com, Reuters-affiliated wire coverage picked up by CBS News, Euronews, Washington Post, Yahoo News, WION) reported in early August 2026 that an explosive-laden drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded near the Kardam border crossing, close to compressor stations serving the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. Bulgarian President/PM Rumen Radev (reports use both titles interchangeably in different outlets) said the drone carried a 'significant' amount of explosives and detonated roughly 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station and about 0.6 miles/1,000 meters from Bulgaria's compressor station on the pipeline. Ukraine's foreign ministry denied intentionally targeting Bulgaria, stating there was no indication it was a deliberate strike, and Kyiv promised an inquiry. No casualties were reported. I did not find a dedicated Reuters Fact Check, AFP Fact Check, Bellingcat, or EUvsDisinfo debunk/verification article specifically adjudicating this claim as true or false — the AFP wire story found is a straight news report, not a fact-check verdict piece.

Assessment
The core claim is corroborated by multiple independent mainstream news outlets citing on-record statements from Bulgarian officials (Radev), and by Ukraine's own foreign ministry response denying intent — this mutual acknowledgment that a drone exploded near the pipeline is strong circumstantial confirmation, though no dedicated fact-checking organization has published a formal verification of this specific incident.
Confidence
Some independent corroboration was found, but it isn't yet conclusive.
